Dr. Jim Bowen
AVAILABLE

Dr. Jim Bowen has been a practicing Family Physician in Norris Point since 1985. Dr. Bowen started his career as a salaried doctor at the Old Cottage Hospital in Norris Point but then opened a fee-for-service practice in 1994. From 1994 to 2020 he managed a very busy solo practice in the community and did regular 1 in 3 ER shifts (weeknights, weekends) at the Bonne Bay Health Care Center as well. During that time Dr. Bowen also looked after In Patients, Long Term Care Patients, and did minor surgical procedures. Additionally he was Chief of Staff in Bonne Bay and the local Medical Examiner for many years. In 2020 he discontinued hospital work and switched to a full-time concentration in his office which is currently a blend of virtual and in-person, assisted by a well-tweaked EMR (Telus Platform). He has a great administrative assistance and his current secretary, Carol Ann McDonald, who is very tech savvy and experienced, has been with Dr. Bowen for 15 years.

In terms of external medical involvement, Dr. Bowen has sat on the Board of Directors of the NLMA several times and served on a variety of NLMA sub-committees. He has been a clinical assistant Professor of Medicine with Memorial University for many years with a focus on teaching second year residents.

Currently Dr. Bowen is on the Board of Directors for the Long Range Family Practice Network, which is a great fit, as the focus for the duration of his career will be on modernization and optimization of community family/primary care practice taking into account new innovations like virtual care, EMR and capitation/blended payment models.
